Same Appearance--Can TK Plugs and Icom Plugs be Used Interchangeably?

In the selection of walkie-talkie accessories, Icom connectors and TK connectors (Kenwood connectors) are the two most widely used two-pin audio plugs on the market, widely used in commercial, security, property management, and outdoor operations. Many people mistakenly believe that their similar appearance means they are interchangeable, but there are fundamental differences.

The K connector is the Kenwood standard two-pin interface, an industry-standard fixed specification: 3.5mm + 2.5mm dual three-section plugs with a center distance of 11.5mm. The pin spacing, plug outer diameter, and length are all standardized national dimensions, making it compatible with all brands of K connector headset, programming cables, and microphones on the market. It has no physical locking mechanism or foolproof design, making plugging and unplugging simple and straightforward. Kenwood uses it, and it is also used by Quansheng, TYT, Baofeng, and many other small radio manufacturers.

The Icom connector also has a 3.5mm + 2.5mm dual-pin layout, but it is not a universal K connector specification; the center distance is 10.5mm. The center distance of the sockets, the length of the plastic section of the plug, and the exposed length of the pins are all custom-designed, and some models have a hidden positioning and foolproof structure. While they may look similar, their actual physical dimensions do not match, and forcibly inserting or removing them can easily result in loose connections, poor contact, or even permanent damage to the device interface due to the enlarged socket. This design is suitable for some ICOM radios and older Cobra models.

Compatibility and device compatibility differences

(I) K-type connector: Universal for civilian use, extremely wide compatibility. Compatible with most domestic and imported civilian walkie-talkies, including Kenwood TK series, Baofeng, TYT, and as well as some mid-range commercial models.

(II) Icom S1 connector: Brand-specific, exclusive to professional models. Only compatible with Icom brand walkie-talkies, covering IC-F3, F4, F11, F21, IC-V82, IC-U82 handheld radios, etc. Completely incompatible with K-type connectors and other brand interfaces.

When selecting a walkie-talkie headset, you must strictly adhere to the principle of “device brand matches interface type”: Icom walkie-talkies must use S1 connector accessories; K-type connectors cannot be substituted. Civilian K-type devices can use various K-type connector accessories.

Mixed use can lead to audio distortion, PTT malfunction, device short circuits, and other faults. In professional scenarios, it may also cause communication interruptions and pose safety risks.
